Am I a Falcon, a Storm, or a Great Psalm?*

Say fallen,

and I will give you the arch

of a spine, make a bridge between

animal and anointed

Say ointment, for I have doctored

myself, scraped my wounds

out and laid them

shiny for the world to see

I fed you placental

while I broke and crumbled

Say control

and I will stretch,

and in my enduring will nest

a budding of beings

Say body

and I will give you

my throat raw

from singing, my breath like the

first blow of spring

Say spring

and I will leap like

a spark in charged air

like a hiss

like a flame     like refusal

* The title comes from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke
